Sports dentistry at the highest level of professional cycling
In high performance sport, there are no minor details. Every variable matters. Oral health is one of the most underestimated factors in elite performance until it becomes a problem.
In October, I had the opportunity to live one of the most intense and rewarding professional experiences of my career as a sports dentist: working with Red Bull BORA at their Athlete Performance Center in Talgau, Austria.
Three days inside a true high-performance environment
Over three full days, I carried out comprehensive dental screenings for all riders of the team, fully integrated into a performance-driven environment focused on prevention, availability, and optimization of athlete health.
This was not about routine dentistry.
It was about evaluating oral health as a performance variable, identifying potential risks, and making clinical decisions aligned with the demands of elite cycling.
Among the riders assessed were world-class athletes such as Primož Roglič, Remco Evenepoel, and Florian Lipowitz, along with the rest of the Red Bull BORA squad.
Working with athletes of this level requires more than clinical knowledge. It demands:
- Clear clinical judgment
- Speed and efficiency
- Understanding of training load and competition calendars
- Respect for performance priorities

The Athlete Performance Center in Talgau: excellence by design
The Red Bull Athlete Performance Center in Talgau is a benchmark in modern high-performance sport. Every detail is designed to support the athlete: training, nutrition, recovery, physiotherapy, mental performance—and, critically, medical and dental health.
The presence of sports dentistry within this ecosystem is not accidental.
In professional cycling, an untreated dental infection, active periodontal disease, or undiagnosed oral pathology can lead to:
- Reduced performance
- Impaired recovery
- Increased systemic inflammatory load
- Loss of key training or competition days
The Red Bull standard: professionalism at every level
One of the most impressive aspects of this experience was the professionalism of the Red Bull medical and performance staff. From the very beginning, everything runs with precision: planning, timing, interdisciplinary communication, and deep respect for each professional’s role.
When oral health is naturally integrated into the performance model, its impact becomes clear. That is exactly what I experienced in Talgau.

Sports dentistry applied to professional cycling
This experience reinforces a belief I have held for years:
sports dentistry is not an add-on it is a strategic component of elite performance.
My work focuses on:
- Prevention of oral disease in athletes
- Early detection of inflammatory processes
- Clinical decision-making aligned with the competitive season
- Proportional, performance-safe interventions
Looking ahead: collaborating with more professional cycling teams
Being part of the Red Bull BORA environment at the Athlete Performance Center was an incredible professional and personal experience. More importantly, it represents a clear step toward a defined goal: collaborating with more professional cycling teams and high-performance structures, providing dentistry adapted to the real demands of elite sport.
Modern cycling is built on science, precision, and control of every detail.
Oral health is one of those details, and it matters.
